What is Popular Literature and Courtly Novels about?

Popular literature emerged in the 19th century aimed at the new proletarian classes. Unlike courtly literature, popular literature focuses on telling entertaining stories in a mass format and at a low price to reach all social classes. In the 20th century, French critics referred to popular genres such as romance, detective, and science fiction novels as "paraliterature," characterized by high circulation, low prices, and catering to the tastes of consumer society.
