To mark the bicentenary of Samuel Johnson's death and the centenary of the publication of the first part of the Oxford English Dictionary, the Fulbright Commission in the UK invited eminent lexicographers, linguists and dictionary publishers from Britain, the USA and Europe to an international colloquium. They considered the history of lexicography in English-speaking countries and its relevance to world lexicography today; the training and professional development of lexicographers in Britain, America, France and Germany; the skills needed to use dictionaries successfully, and how they can be imparted and improved; the present and future role of the computer. The proceedings constitute a major survey of the evolution, achievements, problems and perspectives of Anglo-American and European lexicography that will appeal to everyone concerned with the production of dictionaries and their use.
