What is Phenomenology about?
Phenomenology `Phenomenology' names the most decisive development in philosophical thought since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Its significance is first and foremost philosophical, but in so far as all movements in literary theory and criticism have a basis in philosophical thought, the importance of phenomenology for the understanding of literature cannot be underestimated. This can be seen in the attention that phenomenology pays to aesthetics, but even more so in that phenomenology accomplishes a linguistic turn, with all its implications as to a theory of literature. While there are specific strands of literary theory that understand themselves explicitly as belonging to phenomenology ± in particular the hermeneutic movement of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur ± nearly all twentiethcentury ideas of literary criticism have been engendered by the phenomenological movement, especially structuralism, poststructuralism and deconstruction. Indeed, as French phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty said, phenomenology is either everything or nothing (1964).
