What is Developing economies in transition about?

The purpose of this paper is to help strengthen the analysis and forecasting capability for global economic prospects of 11 countries and invite experts to exchange views on: (a) how each views his own economy evolving; (b) how they view the linkage to the global economy; and (c) in their view what type of model is best suited for their country of expertise. The conference sought to look at the recent experiences and assess future prospects. The countries were chosen to broadly represent developing countries and the various types of development experiences. In addition to the 11 country studies, there were two other papers. The first, on the Global Accounting Framework (GAF), incorporates national income accounts with balance-of-payments accounts and its sources of financing together with cross-country real and financial linkages. It also provides a convenient view of how world resources are distributed and indicates the direction of capital flows. Finally, a paper on the economic prospects for developing countries in the 1990's emphasizes the pivotal role that will be played by the degree to which countries can follow economic adjustment programs
