Leonardo da Vinci designed various mechanical devices in the 15th century including parachutes and studied bird flight. He drew detailed plans for a human-powered ornithopter but there is no evidence he built one. The idea of human-powered flight based on birds recurred over centuries. Sir George Cayley was the first to understand the scientific principles of flight and aeronautical engineering. In 1799, he outlined the concept of the modern airplane with separate systems for lift, propulsion and control.
