Eris is the second largest known dwarf planet in the Solar System, measuring 2,326 km in diameter and having a mass of 0.27% that of Earth. It was discovered on January 5, 2005, by a team of scientists at the Palomar Observatory, who had been searching for large outer solar system bodies. The discovery came after reanalyzing old data with a lower motion limit after the discovery of another dwarf planet, Sedna.
