Michelle Armstrong-Partida's book moves beyond such bad boys. Its aim is to explore what was normal, at least in latemedieval Catalonia, about priests having de facto marriages. Defiant Priests has less to do with defiance than with the simultaneous operation of two disparate models of clerical behaviour: one, the model of clerical celibacy set out by the Gregorian Reforms; the other, the model of the local family man who happens to be a priest. Defiant Priests focuses on Catalan parish priests in the first half of the fourteenth century. It draws from the accounts of pastoral visits conducted by bishops or their representatives, and from the diocesan and municipal records of complaints against clerics.
