Mycobacterium lepromatosis is a bacterium discovered in 2008 that, along with Mycobacterium leprae, causes leprosy. M. lepromatosis specifically causes diffuse lepromatous leprosy, a severe form of leprosy found mainly in Mexico and the Caribbean characterized by nerve invasion, extensive skin ulcerations, and massive bacterial burden in internal organs. Like M. leprae, M. lepromatosis has not been cultured in a laboratory due to lacking genes necessary for growth outside a host.
