Can I read Infrared Optical Materials, Old and New on EtoBox?

Infrared Optical Materials, Old and New by Ballard, Stanley S. is a Engineering article available to read on EtoBox.

What is Infrared Optical Materials, Old and New about?

There are many different optical materials which transmit into the infrared spectral region to a lesser or greater extent. In historical sequence, there were first the natural crystals such as rock salt, then the synthetically produced single crystals and the special glasses, then semiconductor materials such as germanium and silicon. The most recent ones are the hot-pressed, compacted materials that are still in a state of vigorous development. In choosing an optical material to use in a specific application, the engineer or physicist must of course select one which transmits in the appropriate wavelength region, but he should also consider its other optical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties, with respect to the application in mind. In order to make the best possible decision, the designer should be equipped with all available data on these several properties, for the many materials. This article cannot of course supply such a great wealth of information. Only a few of the materials that are most likely to be generally satisfactory are included, and special attention is given to the hot-pressed compacts because of their relative novelty.
