This study monitored circadian and ultradian rhythms of clock gene expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of freely moving mice using bioluminescence reporters. Circadian rhythms were observed for Per1, Bmal1, and Per2 expression in the SCN over periods of up to 3 weeks. The circadian rhythms were overlaid with episodic bursts of approximately 3 hour periods. However, no direct causality was found between the ultradian bursts and activity bouts.
