Poor Darwin! As if the new wave of creationism were not enough, now even his integrity comes under attack. The basis for this attack is this. On March 9, 1858, Alfred Russel Wallace mailed to Darwin from the Moluccas (present-day Indonesia) a manuscript in which he identified natural selection as the mechanism of evolution. When Darwin received the manuscript and what exactly transpired after the arrival of the manuscript at Down, the secluded hamlet in Kent where Darwin was spending most of his days, is not known. But between this unknown date and July 1 of that year, a "delicate arrangement" -as the incident was later to be termed by Huxley's son Leonard -was made: On July 1, at the meeting of the Linnean Society in London, two papers were to be communicated, one on behalf of Darwin and the other on behalf of Wallace. The Wallace paper was to be the manuscript mailed to Darwin, the Darwin communication was to consist of two fragments, a sketch that Darwin sent to Hooker in 1844 and a letter to the American botanist Asa Grey from September 5, 1857.
