What is 9. Public Theology: A Feminist View of Political Subjectivity and Praxis about?

Public theology is sometimes defi ned by the praxis of doing theology for the differing audiences, communities of accountability, or publics of the church, academy, and society that theologians address. 1 At other times, public theology is characterized by the method used to reach those audiences, either by making religious claims more intelligible to wider society via shared norms and practices of rational public discourse or by relying on religious institutions to shape and equip persons with virtues for participating in political discourse. 2 And, at other times, public theology is determined by the goal of integrating theology and ethics into the discursive practices of a deliberative democracy (e.g., lobbying elected offi cials, shaping public debate) in order to add religious perspectives to debates about pressing public-policy issues and to reach consensus about those issues. 3 Thus, public theology represents a polyvalent fi eld of Christian thought and practice regarding the mutual interplay between religious and public life, between church and world, between the body of Christ and the body politic, or what historian Martin Marty called over thirty years ago "the res publi
