The Smithsonian Folkways Records and associated Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections were created in 1988 to collect world music recordings and disseminate them. It collects recordings from over 50 years of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and 13 independent record labels. The collections include over 4000 recordings that are distributed commercially and digitally, with royalties going to musicians. The archives also contain unreleased recordings from the festivals and record labels.
