What is Léon Blum : the formative years, 1872-1914 about?
This biography of the early years of Lon Blum is a study in the making of a socialist. The forces and commitments that shaped the schoolboy, the young lawyer, the reformer of sexual mores, the developing skills of a penetrating literary critic whose reviews won the friendship - and often enmity - of such men as Andr Gide, Anatole France, and Maurice Barres, and the social awareness that caused him to be an early supporter of Dreyfus and finally one of the leading French politicians of this century - such are the themes in his life that have fascinated the author and led him to say with conviction: "He was one of the most attractive figures of the 20th century." In order to understand and to evaluate the later career of Lon Blum as leader of the French Socialist party, as France's first socialist and Jewish premier, and as head of the Popular Front experiment, it is essential to understand the development and character of his ideas and attitudes during the first 40-odd years of his life. This book is dedicated to that cause.
