Rafael Urdaneta was a Venezuelan military officer and politician who played a key role in the independence of Venezuela and was the last president of Gran Colombia. He was born in 1788 in Maracaibo and joined the revolutionary movement in 1810. He served under Simón Bolívar and was one of his most loyal generals. In 1830, he became president of Gran Colombia after overthrowing Joaquín Mosquera, but he resigned in 1831 following the dissolution of the country. He died in exile in Paris.
