What is Migration and evolution patterns of floras and faunas in marine Early Cretaceous sediments of NW Europe about?
Munerlose, J., 1992 Migration and evolution patterns of floras and faunas in marine Early Cretaceous sediments of NW Europe Palaeo, 94: 261-282. The distribution and migration patterns of marine nannofloras and faunas in the Early Cretaceous (Berriasian-Aptian) of NW Europe are described. Boreal nannofloras and faunas dominate in the latest Berriasian, the Early Valanginian, the mid Late Valanginian, the late Early Hauterivian and the mid Late Hauterivian. Sea-level highstands linked to warming enabled Tethyan nannofloras and faunas to spread into NW Europe during three intervals: (1) in the earliest Late Valanginian, (2) in the latest Valanginian and earliest Hauterivian, and (3) in short influxes in the Late Hauterivian, culminating in the latest Hauterivian. During the Barremian regression the palaeoceanography of NW Europe changed totally from a marginal sea to a restricted basin. This oceanographic setting allowed the evolution of endemic nannofloras and faunas. A major sea-level rise, caused by increased sea floor spreading, changed the palaeoceanographic situation significantly in the Aptian. Due to widespread oceanic conditions, nannofloras and faunas became homogenised and
