Bangladesh established its central bank after independence by declaring the local office of the State Bank of Pakistan as the central bank. 12 Pakistani banks were reformed into 6 nationalized banks with their 1090 branches. The Bangladesh Bank Ordinance was enacted in October 1972, and until 1991 the Bangladesh Bank controlled the banking system under the Company Act of 1913 and the Banking Company Act of 1949.
