What is Antibiotic Use for COVID-19 RTIs in Scotland about?
A point prevalence survey conducted in 15 Scottish hospitals assessed antibiotic prescribing for suspected respiratory tract infections (RTI) in hospitalized patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. Out of 820 surveyed patients, 33.3% received antibiotics, predominantly empirical, with amoxicillin and doxycycline being the most commonly prescribed. The study highlights the need for improved antimicrobial stewardship to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use in this patient population.
