In 1815, Monteggio (1) advocated the injection of alcohol and lead acetate into varicosities in order to produce obliteration of the lumen of the vein. Since then, scores -of sclerosing agents of varying degrees of suitability have been offered to the medical profession. Judging from the varieties of compounds which are known and used for this purpose, it can be concluded that no particular kind of substance and no specific structure is individually responsible for the sclerosing action. A survey of the literature reveals that a majority of physicians favor sodium morrhuate solutions. It is quite generally known, however, that the com-\*
