What is Quantification of Thallium in Rocks and Meteorites by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry about?
A procedure was developed for the quanhficatlon of thalbum at the ultratrace level (ng g-l) m geoloacal matenals The sample 1s dissolved m 3 M H2S04 to which IS added KI and K,HP04 The thalhum IS then extracted as its mdo complex mto methyhsobutyl ketone (MIBK), leavmg behind most of the n-on The remamder of the iron IS removed from the organic layer by back-extra&on mto 3 M H,SO, The added K,HPO, enhances the extraction of thalhum mto the MIBK layer which 1s then analysed by graphite furnace atonuc absorption spectrometry The hnut of detection (30) was about 2 ng g-' m the ongmal sobd sample, though this could be reduced by further multiple loadmgs Precmon and accuracy were determmed by analysts of the standard reference rocks G-l, W-l and CAAS Sulphlde Ore The precmon ranged from 3 03-10 5% dependmg on the thalhum content of the rocks, and the relative error (accuracy) ranged from 2 l-6 7%
