What is Fringing Fields in Microstrip Antennas about?
The fringing electric fields around the edges of a microstrip patch antenna add up in phase and are responsible for the radiation of the antenna. The voltage distribution on the patch results in out-of-phase voltage and current, producing fringing fields beneath the patch. These fringing fields extend farther into the air when using a substrate with a lower permittivity. In contrast, microstrip transmission lines use high permittivity substrates to contain the fields and prevent radiation.
