What is Advanced Solid State Lasers - 2.0-J Ti:SAPPHIRE LASER OSCILLATOR about?

A multi-joule Ti:Sapphire oscillator has been constructed using an "end-pumped" configuration. The dye pump laser delivered up to "10 J at > 495 nm over 3.0 flsec (FWHM). Efficiencies of -20 percent were obtained and no parasitic oscillations were observed. Two "bricks" of Ti:Sapphire were employed in these experiments and were cut with Brewster end faces (parallelograms). Three of the remaining four sides were frosted to suppress parasitics. The bricks measured 1 x 1.5 x 2.0 cm 8 and 1.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 cm' in size. The output coupling fraction (transmission) of the flat-flat cavity was varied between 2055, 4058 and 6058; the back mirror had a reflectivity of -98%. Diagnostics included: calorimetry; temporal pulse shapes of the pump beam, lasing beam, and sidelight fluorescence; and burn patterns. The end-pumped configuration yielded the highest efficiency in these experiments, but side-pumping efficiencies should improve when higher pump energies become available. Typical results are 2 J of output energy at "780 nm with 10 J of pump at 495 nm. These results are described and comparisons are made with Ti:Sapphire oscillator models. The applicability 262
