What is Alkali Metal Thermal to Electric Converter about?
The alkali-metal thermal to electric converter (AMTEC) was invented in 1966 and converts heat directly into electricity using sodium ions conducting through a solid electrolyte. A single AMTEC cell accepts heat from 900-1300 K and produces over 1.5V and 0.5W/cm2 with efficiencies up to 16%. AMTEC has potential for high efficiency power generation from various heat sources and applications including distributed power generation and waste heat recovery.
