Operating factor is the percentage of time a welder spends welding versus total working time. It is calculated as arc time divided by total hours worked multiplied by 100. A 30% operating factor means 30% of time is spent welding. Operating factors are typically 30% for SMAW, 45% for semi-automatic GMAW/FCAW, and 60-80% for automatic GMAW/FCAW. There are three methods for estimating welding costs: cost per unit, cost per length, and cost per weight. Cost per unit is best for parts moving through work cells
