What is Biotechnology in Modern Aquaculture about?

The use of modern biotechnological tools to enhance production of fish holds great potential not only to meet demand but also to improve quality and quantity of fish in aquaculture system. Biotechnology in aquaculture can be used to control the sex of fish and breeding cycle, to produce stocks with higher nutrients, more resistance to diseases, better growth rates, and more tolerance to abiotic changes. Among these, the most recent one is the use of biotechnology to produce transgenic fish, i.e., AquAdvantage salmon, a genetically modified Atlantic salmon. Molecular markers provide accurate information on genetic diversity of natural stocks and allow genetic tagging in breeding programs. In addition, preservation of the reproductive cells for a long time by the cryopreservation technology provides protection of economically important or endangered species. Biotechnology can also provide the production of sterile fish to prevent the harm that unwanted gene escapees affect biodiversity. Fish are also used as model organisms for investigating gene functions and developing biotechnological methods for different purposes. As biotechnological techniques continue to develop rapidly, their
