## The kinetics of oxidative addition of sulfonyl chloride (RSO,CI) to trans.-Ir(CO)XL, is given by the second order rate law: rate = kz [Ir(CO)XL2] [RS02-Cl]. The rates increase with increasing basicity of ligands L and X in the order Cl < Br <I and P(OPh)3 < PPh3 < P(p-CH&H& < P(CHJPhz. The dependence of the rate on R in RSOzCl is p-CICJIe < C&ls < p-CH&I& < n-&H,. The activation parameters for the reaction of Ir(CO)Cl(PPh,), with PhSOZCl in benzene are AH\* = I6 kcal/mol and AS\* = -14 cal/deg mol. This reaction b not inhibited by radical scavengers galvinoxyl or duroquinone and not promoted by benzoyl peroxide. The mechanistic implications of these results are discussed.
