Jacob Davis was born in Latvia in 1831 and immigrated to the United States, working as a tailor in several cities before settling in Reno, Nevada in 1868. In response to a request from a customer for durable work pants, Davis invented jeans with copper rivets at points of strain like pockets. Within 18 months he had sold over 200 pairs, and began collaborating with Levi Strauss to mass produce and patent the design.
