What is Introduction to Computational Modeling of Complex Microstructures about?
In this chapter, we introduce the computational reconstruction and modeling of complex microstructures for the calculation of effective mechanical and thermal properties of heterogeneous materials. Statistical correlation functions are defined as descriptors of heterogeneous microstructures. The reconstruction of heterogeneous materials based on statistical descriptors is briefly explained and used to realize the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure from its 2D scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image for a multiphase medium. The 3D reconstruction of heterogeneous materials can be used to calculate effective properties and predict percolation threshold of heterogeneous materials. We briefly discuss different homogenization techniques (such as finite element, mean field, statistical continuum mechanics, and asymptotic approach) for calculation of effective mechanical and thermal properties. Finally, the basic concept of microstructure hull and materials design are discussed. This chapter gives the audience a basic concept to understand step-by-step modeling and homogenization of complex microstructures.
