What is The formation of a cleavage crack in a crystalline solid—I about?
A simple model is presented for the formation of a cleavage crack in a crystalline solid, and the equilibrium dislocation distribution for any length of crack is determined in terms of the stresses that are actually operative, enabling crack stability to be examined at all stages. The results of the analysis confirm Stroh's conclusion that nucleation is more difficult than growth, provided that the effective fracture surface energy retains the free surface value throughout the whole process. It is argued that those situations where experimental results clearly show that growth is the most difficult stage probably arise as a consequence of the effective fracture surface energy during some stage of fracture being greater than the free surface value.
