Georgios Nikolaou Papanikolaou was a Greek pioneer in cytopathology and early cancer detection. He invented the Pap smear test, which is used worldwide to detect cervical cancer. In 1928, he first reported that uterine cancer could be diagnosed through a vaginal smear, but the importance of his work was not recognized until 1943 when he published a book with Herbert Frederick Traut discussing how to prepare smears and the cytological changes seen in cancer.
