What is Hydrogen Diffusion in Weld Metal about?
Hydrogen can enter molten weld metal when hydrogen-containing molecules break down during welding, allowing hydrogen atoms to diffuse through hot weld metal and escape. However, at lower temperatures hydrogen cannot diffuse as quickly and may become trapped in the weld as it solidifies, which can cause cracking over time as the trapped hydrogen accumulates at defects in the steel microstructure.
