Two inmates, Abraca and Dioso, killed two other inmates from a rival gang inside the New Bilibid Prison. Both Abraca and Dioso were already serving time for previous convictions of homicide and robbery, respectively. As they had committed the new crime while incarcerated, the Supreme Court ruled that they were quasi-recidivists, making the maximum penalty death. However, due to a lack of votes, the Court commuted their sentences to life imprisonment instead of imposing the death penalty.
