What is Propp about?
Vladimir Propp extended the Russian Formalist approach to analyzing narrative structure. He broke down Russian folk tales into their smallest narrative units called "narratemes" and identified 31 generic narratemes that were present in a consistent sequence. Propp found that characters and actions could be categorized, allowing him to develop a typology of narrative structures common across Russian folk tales.
