What is Magellan about?

Ferdinand Magellan set out from Spain in 1519 with five ships to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands. He discovered the Strait of Magellan and became the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean. Only one ship returned to Spain three years later with only 18 crew members surviving. Magellan was killed in the Philippines but his expedition proved the world was larger than previously imagined and that it could be circumnavigated by sea.
