This study investigated the effects of implicit and explicit instruction on the acquisition of Dutch spelling rules among first-grade students. Results indicated that explicit instruction led to greater progress in spelling compared to control conditions, with both low- and high-skilled spellers benefiting similarly. However, neither group fully generalized their knowledge to new or pseudo-words, highlighting the limitations of both instructional approaches.
