What is Drug Use and Youth in France about?

Jacques Ellul, a professor in France, discusses the rise of drug use among working-class youth. He notes that drug use has spread beyond traditional artistic circles to include many young people seeking escape. Many use inexpensive over-the-counter drugs rather than more expensive illegal drugs. Their goal is no longer artistic expression but "caving in" - destroying themselves due to a sense of despair with society. Ellul believes drug use stems from youth feeling unable to live up to society
