Dr. Mortimer reads a manuscript to Holmes and Watson. The manuscript is a statement from Hugo Baskerville to his sons from 1742. It describes how Hugo abducted and chased a young woman across the moor with his hounds, until they came upon a large black beast that killed Hugo. The beast was said to have plagued the Baskerville family ever since. Dr. Mortimer took the manuscript from Sir Charles Baskerville before his death, which deeply troubled him.
