What is Thomas Aquinas’ Reception in Fourteenth-Century Byzantium about?

## Abstract The translation of the two Summae of Thomas Aquinas by the brothers Demetrios and Prochoros Kydones was an important event that set in motion several intellectual forces in Byzantium in the late fouteenth century. A close circle of intellectuals who were opposed to the teaching of Gregory Palamas embraced the scholastic movement and became estranged from the Byzantine Church. However, most Byzantine theologians, Neilos Kabasilas being most prominent among them, rejected Western scholasticism, arguing that the use of proofs as exemplified in the case of the discussion of theological problems by Aquinas was contrary to traditional theology. In spite of that, even some Orthodox theologians like Theophanes of Nicaea were influenced by the thought of Thomas Aquinas, considering it a valuable tool for the solution of various theological problems.
