What is Effect of hydraulic and organic loads in Sequencing Batch Reactor on microbial ecology of mixed cultures and storage of polyhydroxyalkanoates about?
In order to produce polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) from microbial mixed cultures, a previous "acclimation" stage is usually operated to increase rate and yield of PHA storage, under conditions of alternating excess and lack of substrate ("feast and famine" regime). Under "feast and famine", most microorganisms are triggered to store PHA and a selective advantage can be established for microorganisms that are quicker both to store PHA during the feast phase and to reuse it for growth in the famine phase. On the other hand, several mechanisms are also influencing the microbial speciation and the physiological state of the mixed culture, including feed composition (often a concentrated mixture of volatile fatty acids), organic load rate (OLR) and biomass or hydraulic residence times (SRT or HRT). In this presentation, the effect of OLR on acclimation of mixed cultures under feast and famine conditions (in a Sequencing Batch Reactor, SBR) and on their storage response is analysed. The OLR has been investigated in the range 8.5-40.8 g COD/L d by either increasing the feed concentration (8.5-31.5 g COD/L) at fixed SRT of 1 d (equal to HRT, because of no settling phase in the SBR) or by dec
