What is Reporting Sexual Assault: A Social Ecology Perspective (Criminal Justice: Recent Scholarship) about?

Menard (sociology, Pennsylvania State U.) examines the social ecology of victims' decisions to contact the police using two studies, the first of which surveyed college students to investigate the labeling of and the advice to report criminal events to the police, and the second of which compiled and analyzed data from 48 rape crisis centers in Pennsylvania. She found that individual and location factors influenced the decision, based on the severity of the attack, age, intoxication, relationship with the offender, and the locale's gender equality, victim services and percentage of stranger assaults. She examines in detail the prevalence of sexual assault and reporting patterns, processes victims go through to make their decisions, their concerns about labeling and reporting, and the implications for future policies.
