This thesis examines a traditional healing practice called Poonkutilmana in north Kerala, India. Poonkutilmana is run by Nambudiri Brahman males who practice a combination of Ayurveda and mantravada (use of mantras). The healers receive clients from the local Muslim-majority district as well as farther areas. The study identifies the main afflictions treated as Brahmaraksas, petiyilpetuka, sathru dosham, and protecting the vulnerable like pregnant women.
