This report is the result of a project to develop measures of key environmental conditions, risks, and changes resulting from agriculture, and of management practices used by producers. These indicators are expected to be useful in such areas as monitoring agricultural environmental performance. Section A gives the background to the project, including the concepts & methods used and the driving forces that affect environmental & other trends in agriculture. The next six sections present agro-environmental indicators related to farm management (soil cover, nutrient & pesticide inputs), soil quality (risks of erosion, soil organic carbon, risks of soil compaction & salinization), water quality (risks of contamination by nitrogen & phosphorus), greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, and production intensity (residual nitrogen, energy use).
