What is Digital embroidery about?
Regardless of its sometimes questionable reputation in the public eye, the textile industry has always been a forerunner in the industrialisation and digitalisation of its manufacturing processes. Adapting the often highly sophisticated manufacturing technologies to new requirements is the key to success for many evolving markets like that of smart and eTextiles. This chapter introduces state-of-the-art digital embroidery technology for the manufacture of eTextiles. It briefly illustrates the evolution of embroidery machinery and introduces the two machine concepts of schiffli and multihead embroidery. It references past and current developments concerning eTextile manufacture on industrial embroidery machines and gives an overview of possible applications of embroidery for eTextiles such as the textile integration of lighting, sensors, antennas, and electronic components. It emphasises the cross-disciplinary approach needed to successfully design an eTextile product for mass manufacture and finally includes a nonexhaustive list of resources for support when considering eTextile manufacture with digital embroidery techniques.
