Valdis Snow is a rare vampire who lives alone in the forest of Moonrise, Washington. She encounters three new students at her high school - Ambrose, Hecate, and Nyx Cross - who reveal themselves to also be vampires of her rare breed. They ask to stay with Valdis, explaining they have no other home after their parents were murdered. Valdis hesitantly agrees and brings them to her home. Ambrose seems particularly interested in Valdis and looks at her in a special way.
