What is Preface to the 9Th International Congress on Isozymes, Genes, and Gene Families about?

We are delighted to present this special volume commemorating the 9th International Congress on Genes, Gene Families, and Isozymes, held April 14-19, 1997, in San Antonio, Texas. We are especially appreciative of The Journal of Experimental Zoology and its editor, Dr. Francis Ruddle, for publishing these proceedings as a special issue. This is particularly appropriate because Dr. Clement Markert, honorary president of the 9th International Congress in 1997 and an original founder of the isozyme concept in 1959, also served as editor of the Journal from 1963 to 1984. We are confident that through the Journal's prestigious reputation and circulation, these proceedings will reach a broad spectrum of scientists worldwide. This too is a fitting reflection of Dr. Markert's lifelong efforts to disseminate high-quality biological science throughout the world. This volume includes 27 peer-reviewed papers, plus an overview of the Congress. These proceedings provide a representative portion of the outstanding scientific program compiled for the Congress. We are very grateful to the many authors and reviewers who participated in this process. Through their diligent efforts, we are able to pres
