This study investigates the duration of SARS-CoV-2 viral shedding in critically ill COVID-19 patients, particularly focusing on the impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Among 48 intubated patients, the median viral shedding duration was found to be 25 days, with type 2 diabetes significantly associated with prolonged shedding. The findings suggest that a single negative lower tracheal aspirate RT-PCR may be sufficient to assess infectivity in these patients.
