Hans Selye published a landmark letter in Nature in 1936 describing a non-specific response to stressors (harmful agents) that he called the "general adaptation syndrome". This response included enlarged adrenal glands, lymph node and thymic atrophy, and gastric erosions/ulcers. Over 75 years later, this letter inspired immense medical research on stress. Selye went on to classify steroid hormones, discover their anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory roles, and define concepts like distress and eustress. H
