What is Tacaná Volcano Flank Collapse Study about?
During the late Pleistocene, growth of an andesitic dome at Tacaná volcano triggered a flank collapse along the northwest side. This generated a debris avalanche that traveled 8 km and covered 4 square km. Subsequent dome collapse produced block-and-ash flows over the avalanche deposits. Radiocarbon dating provides a minimum age of 10,610 years for the collapse. The failure orientation suggests it was controlled by the regional stress field. The paper analyzes the deposits to understand the collapse trigger
