What is Incipient Diversity: Gender and Race in Media and Religion Research about?
Although gender and race/ethnicity have long been crucial concerns within academic research in many disciplines, the field of media and religion has only slowly begun to catch on. Following calls for integrating cultural studies into the larger media research agenda (Dines, 1995), Hoover proposed a "culturalist turn" within media and religion scholarship to shift research paradigms away from media-effect-centered positivist approaches toward cultural studies-based and audience-oriented frameworks (Hoover, 2002a(Hoover, , 2002b;;Hoover & Venturelli, 1996). This approach introduces possibilities of a more critical view toward ideologies in media texts and mediated lived experience. It also allows more scholars to tackle gender and race/ethnicity issues, as this subject matter is a central concern of cultural studies. This chapter reviews and assesses studies on gender and race/ethnicity in media and religion research over the past two decades. I utilized the EBSCO search engine and eight of the field's leading journals 1 to locate relevant work published between 2000 and 2020. The chapter identifies emerging scholarship in three areas: gender, race/ethnicity, and the intersection bet
