What is Xenobiotic Metabolism: Phase 1 & 2 Reactions about?
Xenobiotics are compounds foreign to the body. The body metabolizes xenobiotics through two phase biotransformation reactions to make them more water soluble and excretable. Phase 1 reactions add functional groups through enzymes like cytochrome P450. Phase 2 then conjugates the compound to large water soluble molecules like glucuronic acid, sulfate, or glutathione, allowing excretion. The liver, lungs, kidneys, intestines, skin and testes all contain enzymes for biotransformation, particularly cytochrome P
